In what has been the most competitive mayor’s race in years, Boston voters are finally having their say today in the race between Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino (D) and City Councilman Michael F. Flaherty Jr (D) from South Boston.

Flaherty was born in South Boston and elected to the Boston City Council in 1999, according to the Boston Globe, and was president of the Council from 2002-2007. The man he challenges, Menino, is running for a unprecedented fifth term as mayor.

The municipal elections will also determine the makeup of the City Council. 21 candidates will be competing for 13 open seats on the City Council.
